COLOUR (US: color)

noun: The property possessed by an object of producing different sensations on the eye as a result of the way it reflects or emits light.

verb: Change the colour of (something) by painting, dyeing, or shading it.

1. a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without itself suffering any permanent chemical change

2. A person or thing that causes a change

"The colours around you matter, so make a definite choice and experiment more with colour yourself."

I want to help lift the world from the downward spiral that we all seem to be in, getting more and more insular, and instead open up people’s hearts and actions to promote joy and happiness, and colour has the power to help us all do this, in our personal and business lives.

I want to inspire everyone to embrace colours with confidence in ways they haven’t done before.

Why Creatives especially?

Because creatives are a unique group of people who often work on their own as their creativity needs time and space to operate at its best.

But creatives are often their own worst enemy too and sometimes too many ideas leads to freezing and non-action.

Knowledge of colour and the effect colour has on all of our brains can be the secret weapon in a creative's armoury when having to face the business world. Those endless teams we are told to work in. Group brainstorming sessions.. although the last twenty years of research has shown that this groupthink policy (ref: Susan Cain, Quiet) does not actually aid productivity or innovation.

I am a creative introvert - if you know Myers Briggs Personality types - I am an INFJ. Not many of us about. But boy do we make our skills count!

(INFJ stands for Introvert, iNtuitive, Feeling, Judging and represents individual's preferences in four dimensions characterising personality type, according to Jung's and Briggs Myers' theories of personality type.)

How it all started ...

My colour story started with a lifelong love of colour which continued into professional art, design and business training, that I now wish to share with you.

My love of colour has been used professionally in my art and design based career; from graphic design through to textile design and into theatre productions.

As a small child the question I hated the most was "What is your favourite colour?"

I couldn't understand why all these people were asking me to choose!

Why should I?

I love all colours - every colour has it's own unique place in the world and is beautiful in its own right.

But I have never been one to follow the crowd.

I have always wanted to tread my own path and I have done that - peers have very little influence over me, I do not follow fashion or celebrity lifestyles.

That is the crux of what I want to share with you - I want you to become confident in your creative business.

Start listening to your heart and stop worrying about what fashion says or other people near you.

There are a lot of very loud, opinionated people in the world of fashion who declare which colours we should all be using.

But if those colours are not right for you, you should not use them at all!

There are so many ways available today to customise and colour our world as we want to.

As a student I painted my bicycle seven different colours with enamel paints and my Doc Marten's were painted in three colours with shoe paint that cracked with time... everyone always knew what was mine!

I put tiny braids with lots of multicolour beads in my hair. But I never went as far as dyeing my hair a bright pink as that would be too permanent for me!

Colour is there to be played with and enjoyed in the moment.

I also understand that not every situation is suitable for bright and bold... sometimes toning things down is required. So my reddish brown hair and brown eyes have stayed pretty much all the time. Colours shine through me in different ways, which is how it should be.

Colour can have a huge effect on your emotions.

Have you noticed how when you go away to a new country on holiday that the light is different? Light plays a huge part in how we perceive colour.

I spent three years living in the South of France where the great impressionist artists created some of their most iconic pieces of art - Cezanne and Van Gogh being among the most well known.

The light in the South of France is magical. It makes the landscape sing with colour. These artists were not "making up colours" in their paintings but really painting all they saw in front of them.

I lived another three years close by Monet's gardens at Giverny in Normandy, where my first child was born. Visiting his gardens throughout the year was a joy which I shared with our many visitors.

Looking back over my much-travelled life, my sensitivity to colour has left very strong colour memories in my head of the many places I have lived and the colours that stood out to me in those locations.

Here is just a snippet of these memories:

SEATTLE: Warm and bright autumnal colours and huge trees.

SYDNEY: Purple Jacaranda trees, yellow sandy beaches and blue skies.

GIVERNY: Green apple orchards and Pink cherry blossom.

BASEL: Red brick town hall and green green hills with black and white cows.

BOISE: Intense blue skies with yellow grasses and vibrant autumnal leaves.

MONTPELLIER: Sunsets that set the skies on fire placed against olive groves.

OXFORD: Bluebell woods in the springtime, and the summer explosion of colour in all the gardens filled with flowers.

Grafton Jacaranda

I have lived in many places, and travelled to far more, and every stop along the way I have let the colours around me infuse into me to be retrieved at a later date. To me one of the greatest joys of travel is documenting the colours through my love of photography.

The colours of Marrakesh in Morocco cemented themselves in me from my visit as a 14 year old who had a local Prince asking for my hand in marriage! At the point Dad started bartering me for camels, he backed away fast! Moroccan men seem to fancy themselves somewhat...

My combined professional studies and training in Psychology, Art, Art History, Textile Design and an MBA have led me create this website and service to you: Colour Catalyst.

This is my way to share with you all the aspects of colour that I have gathered over the years and help bring greater joy into your life through understanding colour and learning how to use in the way that is right for you.

I hope you join me on the voyage of discovery into the world of colour and what colour can give to us in the business environment.
